I found various makes of TRVs had been fitted to the radiators by the previous owners. One make in particular, Westherm four, all have the same problem with the pins. The pins aren’t stuck, they move freely up and down when using a pair of grips but they stay in the up or down position and don’t pop up under spring pressure. I’ve banged them a bit and sprayed them with WD40 several times over several days but the pins still won’t spring up from the down position.
I guess they are faulty but can they be saved somehow or is it time to call out the plumber to have them all changed?

Hi,
see this problem a lot of the time. Westherm is quite old valves, however-do not over do it as the pin can come flying out and a jet of constant water following!
They are usually gunked up with sludge that causes them to stick open or closed. if you can get a bottle of 'calchem 4 in 1'' and introduce it into your system water, this will free them over a short time of about a week. Banging on the sides of the valve ( the chrome bit) several times with a heavy spanner will also pop them free. Make sure the heads are back on first though! if no joy then new ones required.
