yes I agree. not really necessary to tank a shower as the water doesn't really sit on the tiles unless of course it isn't tiled correctly in the first place. a couple of years ago I had to redo a shower where the grout had failed massively soaking the wall on both sides. so much so that I had to hire a dehumidifier for a week to dry it out. when redoing it I used hardi backer board to tile onto, grouted and sealed properly it hasn't leaked since.

i only use plastic pvc wall panels now, given up the tiling lark.
those panels are 100% water tight if done right and easy to change later years-like wall paper!
